Title Mrs Violetta Price and Renetta The Strip tease Girl Sign - wider crop
Description Black and white photograph of an elderly show woman in front of a sign which reads 'Renetta The Strip tease Girl' The photograph is a portrait of Mrs Violetta Price, taken outside her show in Commercial Road, probably in the early 1960s. Mrs Price came from a family with a long history in the fairground and circus businesses, and together with her husband Tom ran a variety of shows that travelled the length and breadth of Britain in the post-war years. After her husband’s death in the mid-1950s Mrs Price continued running the family business, attending such fairs as Hereford, Nottingham Goose Fair and Stratford Mop. She was of diminutive stature, barely 5ft high, with a warm and generous nature. However, despite her lack of inches she was a force to be reckoned with and never shirked an argument. She died in her 80s around 1964. Mrs Ada Stevens, wife of showman Billy Stevens whose shows also attended Hereford May Fair, was one of Mrs Price’s daughters.
