About Herefordshire History

About Herefordshire History

Herefordshire History is a local history project run by Herefordshire County Library Service. Our aim is to create a unique local history archive by digitising and sharing material that reflects the history and character of Herefordshire; preserving our visual history for future generations and making it freely accessible for researchers, students and the general public. Most of the material on this website comes from our own Herefordshire Libraries local history collection, but items have also been contributed by our many partners, including Herefordshire Archive Service, Herefordshire Museum, local history societies, and most importantly, by generous donations from the general public.

The Herefordshire History website was launched in November 2014 as part of a project commemorating Herefordshire in the Great War, funded by Herefordshire Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Since then, it has continued to grow and evolve and now includes over 40,000 items on Herefordshire from all periods – photographs, postcards, posters, newspapers, maps, letters and books - with more material being added all the time. Ongoing funding and support is provided by Herefordshire Library Service, project partnerships, grants and public donations, supplemented by income from reproductions, publications, exhibitions and displays. All income from sales is used to support and develop the Herefordshire History project.

Copying and reproduction

Individuals are permitted to use, download, transmit, or print images from the website for private, research, or educational purposes, but not for any commercial purpose without further permission from Herefordshire History and/or the original copyright holder/s. For reproduction queries and publication requests please use our contact form.

Submitting items for inclusion in the project

We are always pleased to receive images, letters, maps, or other suitable material which reflects the character and history of Herefordshire. Even modern photographs are useful since they help us build a visual archive for the future. High resolution images may be emailed to herefordshirehistory@herefordshire.gov.uk or sent via www.wetransfer.com if the files are too big to email. If you have multiple or oversize items we can arrange to scan material for you.

All items added to the Herefordshire History collection are accepted in good faith on the understanding that the person donating them has read and agreed with our Terms and conditions of use.
