| Description |
What do you think little Gin, this poor little Jack has been out hunting. We had just finished a long march & I thought I heard the hounds & when I got to my billet they were running close by. The little Jack took off his revolver & everything else & went for a hunt. They were only beagles & belonged to a Cavalry Regiment but it was rather nice having hounds again although it was not very fast. We have had such a dreadful time lately. I have lost about 200 at least out of my lovely Regiment in the last few days. A few from shells but mainly all and feet and worn out. We have had an awfully trying time. A Colonel’s job in the trenches is very tedious. He does not stay in the trench for as you say he could on see a few. He is generally in a farm or ruin of a farm or a dug out, behind the Battalion where he generally gets well shelled. It is a central place where he can see them all, and arrange for something to be done if anything goes wrong & can send back and let the General know. Then he has to go paddling about the trenches at night & seeing what can be done or improvements made etc. |
