Title The Bridgford Family
Description War time letters from Col Bridgford to his family

Col. James Bridgford, his wife Mary and their daughter Geraldine lived at Stansbatch house in Staunton on Arrow, Herefordshire. The documents digitised and transcribed here are a handful of the letters that Colonel Bridgford wrote during his time as an officer in France during WW1 to his daughter. These affectionate letters to Gerry/Gin often describe terrible events and conditions but also cover domestic topics such as socks sent to the front lines and the hunting which he and Gerry enjoyed when at home together. Included are a couple of letters written during the Boer war from Bridgford to his mother which give a fascinating insight into the experience on the ground of the siege at Ladysmith 1900-1901.
These letters were left in the cellar of the house at Staunton on Arrow on his death in 1955.
The entire collection including Boer war era army memo books can be viewed at Herefordshire Archives and Records Centre (Ref. DK86).
