Description |
Black and white photograph of the May Fair in High Town at night. The photograph shows Joe Stevens’ Gallopers in High Town. Mr Stevens (unrelated to the showman Billy Stevens) was the son-in-law of the famous post war circus proprietor, Billy Smart. During the early part of his career Joe Stevens was not a member of the Showmen’s Guild and had his own run of fairs. At the end of the 1950s he successfully applied to run Hereford May Fair, outbidding the South Wales Section of the Guild. He ran the fair for more than just one year, probably in 1960 and 1961, before the Guild resumed control.
