Description | Black and white photograph of James Wathen at his desk. He was born in Eign Street in 1751 and after his fathers death stayed at home to look after his blind mother until her demise in 1801. He was nicknamed Jemmy Sketch and was a familiar sight around Herefordshire. Luckily he was sketching Hereford Cathedral before the dramatic collapse of the west front including much of the nave. It showed deep cracks on the north-west tower. He then drew anther sketch to show the ruins and had both published in the Gentleman's Magazine and other publications to his profit. He boasted that he was a vegetarian and tea-total. He died in Hereford in 1828 and several of his works are held in Hereford City Library. |
