| Description | Black and white photograph of Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex, 1541 - 76. Born at Chartley on 16th September, 1541. Walter was the 2nd Viscount Hereford and 10th Baron Ferrers of Chartley. In 1572, Queen Elizabeth I made Walter a Knight of the Garter and Earl of Essex (which had become extinct in 1571) in acknowledgement of his Bourchier ancestry. He died campaigning in Ireland on 22nd September, 1576. |
