Description | Black and white photograph of a miniature picture of Matthew Wren, Bishop of Hereford, Norwich and Ely, 1585 - 1667. Born in 1585, he became the Dean of Windsor in 1634 and a year later appointed Bishop of Hereford. He then transferred to Norwich and in 1638 to Ely. Whilst in Hereford he revised the Cathedral statutes in accordance with Laud's Arminianism and urged that all altars are restored to the east end of their buildings and surrounded with a rail, this he instituted in all his cathedrals. During the years 1642 - 60 he spent in the Tower and was released at the Restoration, returning to Ely. He died in 1667 and was buried at Pembroke College Chapel. |
