ENCOURAGING RESPONSE TO THE PREMIER'S APPEAL . About a fortnight ago Mr. Lloyd George issued an appeal to farmers and others to grow more potatoes . " I desire to impress upon all farmers and small growers the vital importance of increas- ing to the utmost extent possible the supply of potatoes this year , " wrote the Premier . " There is no crop under existing war condi- tions which can compare with it in impor tance as a food for either man or beast , and it would be quite impossible to plant too many potatoes this spring . " " Last year I appealed to the farmer to grow more potatoes , and he responded by beating all records . This year I appeal again , and with even greater earnestness , because the need is twice as great . If we can get a million acres under potatoes in Great Britain this year , the food situation ! will be safe and farmers will have rendered- an immense service to their country . " " It is encouraging to learn from the Food Production Department that farmers and others in many districts are responding promptly to the Prime Minister's appeal , and there is no doubt that a considerable increase in the acre- age of the crop has been already secured as a result . However , there are still some districts where the position is by no means satisfactory , and it is to be hoped that during the next fort- night potential growers of potatoes in these areas will show increased activity . The Board of Agriculture and the Ministry of Food , however , quite apart from any in- orease in allotment crops , want an increase in the farm crops of potatoes this year amounting to at least 1 million tons . To grow 6 million tons of potatoes will need an increase of more than one - third on the amount of land under potatoes last year , because the crops this year last . The 1917 potato harvest in most districts are likely to be rather less to the acre than was especially heavy , just as the 1916 harvest was especially light . FOOD CONTROL COMMITTEES . These were aug- mented on Monday night by the proceeds of a social held in the Schools , when young people , a few adults , enjoyed a dance , Mrs. Shepherd Munn and Mr. Stubbs playing the piano . It and DON'T WASTE EGGS . The inspecting officer , Lieut . - Gen . Sir E. A. H. Alderson , C.B. , K.C.B. , in addressing the Battalion , said he was very pleased to inspect them . He always said what he thought , especially when talking to soldiers . He had been thinking a good many things that day .. Their association with the Volunteers and ap- pearance that day did them very great credit . They were fitting themselves to defend their country as every able - bodied man ought to do . What a pity it was that thousands of others were not imbued with the same spirit . If this had been the case a few years back Ger- many would not have dared to make war , and if she had dared , it would have been over before this . What a pity and a disgrace it was that a fine old city like Hereford could not find more than 35 A and B men for Volunteers . He saw some of them looked astonished , and did not wonder at it . He thought the men of the city of Hereford must either be blind , or deaf , or very selfish . The speaker proceeded to give six reasons why able - bodied men should join the Army Volunteer Regiments of the country . Every able - bodied man should learn to handle arms . Every sensible business man should insure his property . They had not insured the property of the greatest Empire the world had ever seen . Take history , directly a nation began to neg- lect armies , it had faded away and disappeared . The Bible spoke of the strong man to guard his home and family , and directly a stronger man came along he lost it . The same argu- ment applied to empires . They should be in a position to defend their country and em- pire . Personally , he would not give any man a vote unless he fitted himself to defend his home and country ( hear , hear ) . What would happen if the Germans landed in England ? They might decoy their fleet and do much damage by battle or minefield that it was pos- sible for them to land . They would then realise what war was and the devastation of Belgium , France , Italy , Serbia , Roumania and Russia would be nothing to that in England , because of the Germans " great hate of the Eng- lish . How any man could say " I will not defend my country , " he could not conceive . He was speaking as a soldier with over 40 For two years or so he years ' experience . had been in France . He was not talking as a politician . They should learn how to handle armis , and the authorities of the city and county of Hereford should do all they possibly could to induce men to come forward in a time of great need . Patriotism alone should impel all farmers who can possibly manage it to increase their acreage of potatoes , but the proposition is a vory sound one also from the point of view of business . All farmers who increase their acre- age under potatoes have the option of making a contract with the Ministry of Food for the SUGAR FOR JAM . produce from this new land at an average of £ 6 10s . per ton .
