COUNTY JUVENILE COURT .
STEALING A BICYCLE .
On Monday , George William Hanson , 10 , Railway Terrace , Craven Arms , poultry dealer's assistant , aged 14 years , was charged with stealing a gent's " Sunbeam " bicycle , value , the property of George Warren , Wittleton Hill , railway servant , on the 1st
December .
George Warren stated that he lived at Wit- tleton Hill . On Saturday , 1st December , about six o'clock in the evening he placed the bicycle near the entrance to the railway station and about 8.30 the same evening he went for the bicycle and it was missing . He gave in- tomation to Sergt . Lovatt . On the 11th December a bicycle was shown to him by Sergt . Lovatt and he identified it as his property . Between the time he lost it and the time lie saw it again a carrier and a pump had been litted to the bicycle . He valued the bicycle at 62 .
He did not lend the bicycle to anyone or authorise anyone to take it .
Sergt . Lovatt stated that on the 1st Decem- her he received information of this case and made enquiries and on the 11th December saw the bicycle in possession of defendant . He
stated it came into his possession by another boy who he did not know asking him to have a fide on it on the 1st December , when he was going home , and as he had not seen him again he kept the bicycle . From further in- a carrier for a bicycle on the 3rd December . quiries he ascertained that defendant purchased On the 13th December he again interviewed defendant and cautioned him and told him le suspected him of stealing the bicycle from the railway station on the 1st December and
he denied it . On the following morning de- fendant came to him in Craven Arms and ad- mitted stealing the bicycle on the 1st Decem- ber . He said he was sorry for what he had done and did not know what made him do it . Witness said he should like to say the boy's father gave him every assistance when he knew the boy was suspected
Defendant was formally charged and his mother asked the Bench to deal with the case . Defendant pleaded guilty and said he was very sorry .
The magistrates bound defendant over in £ 5 to be of good behaviour for six months and to pay costs 18s . 6d . , and recommended the father to deal with him . With regard to the owner of the bicycle , he was seeking trouble by leaving it there unprotected without a chain and lock and they only allowed him his railway
fare .

NEW YEAR HONOURS .
LOCAL NAMES .
The New Year honours this year again cover a wide range of public service , although the distinctions have been granted in the main for services in connection with the war . Resi- dents in North Herefordshire will be pleased to find local names in the long list of creations and appointments .
Sir Frederick , Cawley , Bart . , M.P. , who is created a Barou , has represented the Prest- wich Division of Lancashire since 1895 and is Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster . He is , of course , best known to the people of North Herefordshire as the owner of the Berrington Hall Estate and is recognised as an enlight- ened and progressive agriculturist . Under his manager , Mr. Brocklehurst , a considerable acreage of grass was broken up last yeaf ou the estate and very successful crops of oats were grown . The Borough of Leominster has reason to congratulate Sir Frederick on his elevation to the peerage , for thanks to Sir Frederick's generosity in letting a field for allotments at a very low rent , the Food Produc- tion Committee were able to offer such attrac- tive plots to the working men of the town . Sir Frederick is also a keen judge of horses and cattle and takes great interest in the management of his pedigree Hereford herd . Sir Frederick has rendered notable war ser- vice in the Government and has acted on many important committees .
" BABES IN THE WOOD . " TALENTED LEOMINSTER JUVENILES . PRETTY SONGS , DAINTY COSTUMES AND CLEVER DANCES . ANOTHER TRIUMPH FOR THE MISSES
URWICK .
The relief with which people turn from the affairs of everyday life with its unvarying back- ground of war conditions to enjoy as a refresh- ing interlude the unforced gaiety and infectious good spirits of the rising generation was well illustrated in the unprecedented houses which flocked to the Corn Exchange Hall to witness the pantomime " The Babes in the Wood . " Apart from the enthusiasm of proud parents and friends there is something appealing about the acting of children . To them belongs that wonderful world of make - believe , of gnomes and ogres , gipsies and robbers , fairy queens and enchanted castles , and to see children in the presentation of a fairy play is to see them at home . To them art is not longer than life ; it is life itself . And when to native . talent is added the advantage of skilled train- ing , and the scenic details which go so far in the making of a pantomime , a children's play becomes a thing of delight to the veriest The reputation of the Misses misanthrope . Urwick in producing pantomimes presented entirely by local children is now so well estab- lished that it needs no further praise but by A well known local family receives further " Babes in the Wood " they have undoubtedly distinction by the honour conferred upon Sir added to their laurels . characters and the story were an entire change and it was pleasing to find the little players whose talents were so conspicuously displayed on former occasions , appearing with equal suc- cess in new roles . The caste lacked one or two prominent names of former years but the younger members of the company have in the meantime acquired wider experience and took more important parts with credit to them- selves and to their tutors . In glancing through the list of performers with a view to singling out a few of the most noteworthy one is struck by the enormous amount of patient labour and skill necessary to fit some 70 children for a public performance . Then again the costumes , which were appropriate , tasteful and many gorgeous , spoke much for the ability of the Misses Urwick and the ladies who assisted them . The choruses of
