SO Some interesting figures are forwarded by the Food Production Department which show pretty clearly why the Government are anxious to obtain a bumper crop of potatoes this year . There is no crop commonly grown in this country which yields so much human focd per acre . An area of 100 acres under potatoes will provide food value sufficient to maintain over 400 persons for a year ; the same arca under wheat would maintain 230 persons ; under barley , 180 persons ; under oats , 150 persons ; while if the land were under medium grass , producing beef , it would maintain only 15 persons . These figures are not essential facts into consideration . mere LEOMINSTER HORSE REPOSITORY . mathematical conjurings , but take all the NEXT SALE Friday , April 12 , 1918 , SHOW AND SALE . Catalogues may be had of the AUCTIONEERS , Leominster , Hereford and Tenbury . The Germans are under no illusion as to the value of potatoes as a war crop . At the pres- ent time the potato forms from one - third to one - fourth of the diet of the German civilian population , and without it Germany would not have carried the war into the fourth year . Before the war , while the average 100 acres of British cultivated land included less than 2 acres of potatoes , the average 100 acres of German cultivated land included 10 acres under this crop . It is hoped that farmers will bear the above facts in mind , and back up the efforts of our gallant soldiers by ensuring a plentiful supply of food for the people at home . There is no risk of growing too many potatoes ; every ton will be wanted ; and to make the farmer's position absolutely secure the Government have guaranteed to take over the entire crop after next November at guaranteed minimum prices which should make their cultivation an attractive proposition . GROW MORE ONIONS Owing to the reduction of imports it is necessary to increase the crop of home - grown onions , and it is also important that whilst doing this the greatest economy in the use of the use seed should be practised . In order to secure the necessary increase in the area under onions the Food Production Department invites market growers and nur- serymen to increase the acreage normally de- voted to this crop . Owing to labour shortage the larger growers may be unable to add con- siderably to the area under onions and growers and to the nurserymen who are de- therefore the Department looks to the smaller voting land to vegetable crops to undertake a more extensive cultivation of onions .
