Mr. Edwards said the meat would be sent off in carcase form .
The Secretary said that would mean the provision of cooling plant .
Mr. Edwards said he wished them to under stand that he was not advocating the scheme . He was explaining the proposal . His only reason for suggesting that they should join these committees was so that their views could be brought forward . Mr. Taylor asked if the vendor would be paid for the dead weight with no allowance for offals . Mr. Edwards said he was not yet in a posi- tion to give those details .
a
Mr Rees said that wherever there was co - operative society the Government would make use of it , and any buildings that could be adopted could be used
Mr. Owens said he thought the dead weight system would cost the country more than the live weight system . If the cattle were taken to a centre to be slaughtered how was it pos- sible to see the meat weighed ?
Mr. Rees said he believed the Government would appoint officials for that purpose ( laughter ) . Mr. Jones said he thought they should help Mr. Edwards as far as they could . Mr. Colebatch agreed , but said they would oppose any change until the last minute . The Secretary said the Farmers Union had already appointed an Advisory Committee for each market centre and he was sure it was their wish to help Mr. Edwards .

Mr. Griffiths added that he very much doubted this judging by what they heard in London . Mr. Rees asked what was the objection to the dead weight system . If it was only a skin and bone it was the poundage which told and the people would have to pay for it . The Chairman said the only objection against the live weight system was that the Govern- to the ment could not distribute the meat butchers evenly . Mr. Taylor said that under the dead weight system the offals would be wasted in summer . Another point was the difficulty of identifica- tion . Also they would not know how the car- case had been dressed . A beast was entitled to every pound he weighed when he left the premises and not when he had hungered for Several days .
The Secretary said the only thing to be done under a dead weight system was to start co - operative schemes by farmers to have the animals slaughtered . Mr. Powell Davies had carried South Shropshire with him . The only

Mr. Taylor said there was only one considera- tion at the back of every farmer's mind and that was that he should be a patriot and do nothing to hinder the winning of the war . Lord Rhondda had been justified by some , but if he was the strong man he rep . resented himself to be he would have altered the beef prices when he came into power , The Farmers ' Union had asked for 75s . for January and Lord Rhondda acceded . There was no reason why the same pressure should not be brought again and let the Food Controller see that he had made a mistake in forcing the dead weight system . He considered it was a mis- take to have brought in the grading of sheep at the same time as the reduction in amount which a butcher could buy . They were satisfied with the system in regard to cattle . The Secretary stated that looking through the agricultural press he felt at sea in regard to beef prices for the rest of the year and also in regard to the variation of the Lamb Order . He therefore wrote to Lord Rhondda asking if the price of beef had been fixed for the year and whether lambs might be slaughtered at certain live weights according to the breed of sheep . In reply the Ministry of Food stated MEN'S OWN BROTHERHOOD . that it had been decided that the basic price " Sunday's , meeting was an open one and of meat as fixed in the Maximum Prices Order there was of 1917 should not be reduced throughout 1918 . a very large attendance .
