KINGTON'S CREAT EFFORT
FOR WAR BONDS .
At a meeting of the Kington War Savings Committee held on Tuesday evening there were present : The Rev. H. E. H. Probyn ( in the chair ) , the Rev. R. Hawes , Mr. A. J. Dillow , Mr. R. P. Morris , Mr. E. T. Kinsey , Mrs. Hioks , and Miss Butterworth . The Vicar re- ported that a sum of £ 7,796 2s . 6d . had been subscribed to National War Bonds in Kington and District during Business Men's Week . The quota Kington was asked to raise was £ 5,000 , so that the result is eminently satisfac- tory , and a special note was made that the Boys ' School subscribed between £ 7 and £ 8 , and the Girls and Infants ' School £ 28 14s . 1d . The following resolution was unanimously passed : That the Committee desire to put on record their appreciation of the spirited response of Kington and the District to the appeal of War Savings Week . The £ 5,000 asked for was over subscribed , and a total of £ 7,796 2s . 6d . realised . They venture to hope that the effort will have the effect of stimu- lating regular investments in War Bonds and War Savings Certificates . The confidence felt throughout the country in both investments is put beyond any doubt at the total realised by Business Mens Week ' . " .
The thanks of the meeting were accorded the Vicar for his untiring efforts in making the appeal such a decided success .

AN IMPORTANT AND PATRIOTIC COUNTY
MOVEMENT .
IN THE HANDS OF ITS WOMEN .
The ringing call for food , more food , and ever more food , has gone forth to the country . We should be blind indeed if a realisation of the gravity and necessity of the situation had not come home to each one of us , and with it a quickening fire of patriotism which should lead each and everyone to exclaim , " What It is not suf- can I do ? How can I help ? " ficiently known or understood what good work has been done during the past year under the aegis of the Women's War Agricultural Com- mittee , nor that the organising is so far- reaching and complete .
In every parish in the county an able and energetic Woman Parish Registrar has been chosen , whose duty it is to see , that a Com- mittee is formed , and to look after its agri- cultural and horticultural needs and interests . There are also District Representatives and District Secretaries , all posts calling for unlimited effort and energy . By these means every parish in the county is represented , and a corporate body is formed with unlimited The Government , scope and possibilities . recognising that the organisation of Hereford- shire is adequate and practicable , has now , through the Food Dept. , entrusted Women's War Agricultural Committee , -work- ing through the Parish Registrars - with the task of increasing and developing this work .
the
Last year efforts were made in the districts round Bromyard , Bodenham , Brockhampton , Varpole , Ledbury , Sarnesfield , and St. Weon- ard's to collect and find a market for the glut of fruit and vegetables , with great success , but there were difficulties in the way , the chief being the matter of transport .
LEOMINSTER'S £ 41,150 . Business Men's Week , March 4-9 , organised by the National War Savings Committee for the purchase of National War Bonds , was en- thusiastically taken up in Herefordshire gen- erally , and particularly in Leominster under the leadership of the Mayor ( Councillor J. B. Dowding ) . The quota for the town was £ 15,000 representing a sum of £ 2 10s . per head of the population , but so generous and widespread was the response to the appeal which was made that by the end of the week a grand total of £ 42,150 had been secured . The move- the ment was inaugurated by a meeting at Free Library on March 4th convened by Mr. Dowding as Secretary of the War Savings Committee . Mr. E. Ross was voted to the chair and there was a good and representative A well - known dealer has now come forward attendance , including all the bankers of the who is prepared to overcome this and other town . During the meeting the Mayor received difficulties , and the scheme will be put on a a telegram from the Chancellor of the Ex - sound business basis . Motor lorries will call chequer , Mr. Bonar Law , urging the town to at carefully selected and convenient depots do their best and pointing out that every War along the main roads , to which fruit and Bond subscribed that week would show Ger- vegetables may be sent , and will be paid for many to what extent we are in earnest . on the spot . A man will also be sent with the sum of over £ 2,000 was subscribed in the room lorry to weigh the produce , for which empties and the Mayor and Mr. Ross were deputed to will be supplied , and it is hoped the cottagers make a canvass of the town and so far as and all producers will contribute . they were able the district of Leominster .
