WASTE THAT IS OF VALUE TO THE COUNTRY .
Mr. Boffin , in " Our Mutual Friend , " made his fortune out of dust - mounds . But Mr. Boffin was not a typical Englishman ; it has been our national way to do things with a magnificent disregard for trifles , and , if this was not precisely a virtue , it was at any rate a generous shortcoming . But war is achieving what was supposed to be impossible . It is forcing the Englishman to change his national

tified in concluding that three points stand out clearly in regard to the present situation in Germany . There is universal discontent , ag- gravated by the prevalence of profiteering and The masses are war weary urgent of food shortage . and are simply being buoyed up by promises which are not in themselves a satisfactory form of diet where a hungry populace is concerned .
In the days before the war , the problem of disposing of waste was approached with that splendid carelessness with which , in those days , Early Entries kindly Solicited . we treated all matters of the kind . Waste Auction Offices : Craven Arms , Hereford and material , no matter what its possible value , was destroyed , often at a cost which would have Kington . gone a long way towards turning it into useful It must be admitted that in those days we had not very carefully considered ex- actly what kind of waste could be utilised and what could not . Since the war , our needs have set a good many active brains work- ing on the problem , and it is safe to say that there are few kinds of waste material of which the experts cannot now estimate the probable results with the money and labour involved . Methods of dealing with waste have improved enormously , and there are many kinds that Craven Arms and Hereford . can now be profitably treated that before the war were fit for nothing but to be destroyed .

PROFICIENT LAND WOMEN . LATEST TRACTOR FIGURES .
от
A very remarkable degree of proficiency is shown by the figures of the various tests competitions carried out at the Warrington meeting recently when women of Cheshire , Lancashire and Westmoreland showed how well they can do a wide variety of land work . Out of a total of 295 entries in the different classes only 12 of the women failed . Two candidates in the cwoman test obtained the fullest pos- obtianed full marks in threshing . In addition , sible number of marks ; two others did the same in motor tractor work ; and seven candidates

FARMERS .
The weather since Christmas has been so favourable for carrying out the Food Produc- tion programme that in many parts of the country it is understood that farmers have already completed the task of breaking up ad- ditional grass land set them by their County Committee . In these circumstances , and with a view to increasing still further the production of food for the 1918 harvest , the Government for have had under consideration a scheme granting some concession to farmers who in- crease the area of land under the plough over and above that ordered by the County Executive
