LETTON SOLDIER'S AWARD Lance - Corporal R. Baker , South Wales Bor- derers , eldest son of Mrs. J. Baker , of Yew- tree Farm , Kinley , Letton , has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty during the recent fighting by continu- ing to carry wounded under very heavy shell tire . A brother , Pte . Edward Baker , K.S.L.I. , is now spending a short furlough at home after
14 months work in the trenches , during which time he has been twice wounded .
LIEUT . E. S. RUSSELL WINS MILITARY CROSS .
Second- The Military Cross is conferred on Lieutenant ( Acting Captain ) Ernest Stanley Russell , Herefordshire Regiment . He led his men with great skill during an attack , after- wards displaying great coolness and courage in resisting a hostile counter - attack . This gallant fficer's home is at Bryan's Ground , Presteign . During a potion of the Gallipoli campaign he acted as temp . Staff Captain , and is now Act- ing Captain .
PRESTEIGN SOLDIERS .
We regret to learn that Sapper G. Garrett , of the Royal Engineers , is now in hospital in North Wales suffering from severe gas poison- ing , but he is progressing towards recovery . Sapper Garrett joined the army in March , 1915 , at which time he was working as a
plumber for Mr. J. T. Price , builder , Presteign . He sustained his " gassing " at Ypres . Corpl . Richmond Davies has been home on leave for a short time .

on Sunday that two more parishioners had given their lives at the front . One of them Sergt . Main stated that on August 6th at 11 p.m. he was on duty on the highway at Dor stone , Birley , when he saw Rumsey and Break- well on cycles coming from Hereford and go- ing in the direction of Pembridge . Neither had rear lights . He stopped them and asked them why they had not the necessary lights and they said they did not know they had gone out . Fined 2s . 6d , each .
Benjamin Williams , mechanic , Bridge Street , Pembridge , and Frank Howells , labourer , Shobdon , were summoned for a similar offence on the same date .
P.C. Main said he met defendants at Dor- stone at 10.30 p.m. riding cycles from the direction of Hereford . They had no lamps , either at the front or rear . He stopped them and asked for an explanation and they said they had been detained in Hereford .
