He de- veloped a talent for music in an extraordinary manner , profiting , as had Stainer before him , Gore Ouseley . Dr Sinclair was intended for Holy Orders , but the death of his father in his last year at Tenbury changed the course of his life , and in May of 1879 he became , at the age of 16 , a pupil of Dr. C. Harford Lloyd , then organist at Gloucester Cathedral . It is generally known that young Sinclair was Sir Frederick Ouseley's favourite pupil . This mas- ter musician did his utmost to bring out the boy's artistic leanings , and met with a happy response . The result was that when Bishop Benson , afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury , besought Ouseley to recommend a capable young musician for the post of organist of the new Cathedral Church at Truro , the latter named his pupil , and at the early age of 17 Dr. Sinclair found himself a cathedral organ- ist .
