Chapman , Capt .
My dear Mrs. Jones , Please accept the very sincere sympathy of the C.O. , officers and my - lt in your sad bereavement . Ere this 1 feel sure you have heard of your son's death from wounds , which he received on the 14th of this month . He was hit by a piece of shell in the support line near --and was con- veyed to the Field . Ambulance , where he died very shortly after . He was quite unconscious and I feel sure that he felt no pain . It was most awfully sad , for he was one of our latest reinforcements and we thought a great deal of them . He has made the great and supreme
Sacrifice that a man can give his life . He has given it that others might live in security , freedom and peace . I know just how you feel and yet know that you really would not have it otherwise if God so willed and needed his life . What a great joy and comfort the fact
of the Res irrection is to us these days . It reveals to us that those who are parted from us live a very real and conscious life in the presence of God . Thus we think of all the noble sons who have thus given their all for others . Happily in the knowledge that they have done their duty with such faithfulness ... With my sincere prayer that God will comfort F. G. Ward , Chaplain ,

He was buried in an English cemetery in a village behind the line . He adds : " Mingled with your sorrow must be tue pride that your hus- band has given his life for his country , and as his Platoon Commander I would like you to know what an excellent soldier he was , always ready and willing to do whatever fell to his lot The platoon and company are the poorer for their loss . INQUEST AT BROMYARD .
WORKMAN CRUSHED BY TIMBER . The Coroner ( Mr. C. E. A. Moore ) held an inquest on Thursday at Piccadilly Cottage , Bromyard , on the body of William Moss , a labourer , of that address .
At the outset the Coroner informed the Jury , seven in number , of which the Rev. Dixon was foreman , that that was the first inquest he had held under the new Act , which only recently came into operation , enacting that the Coroner shall only summon 7 and not more than 11 , instead of 12 and not more than 23 , for the duration of the war and six months afterwards . It was also the first inquest . he had fixed by telephone , by arrangement with the Superintendent , with the sanction of the Chief Constable , to save the expense and time in simple cases of sending an officer to Leo- minster .
The first witness called was Walter Moss , son of the deceased , a discharged soldier and now a collier . He identified the body as that of his father , William Moss , aged 52 , and a general labourer .
James . Corbett , general labourer , in the em- ploy of the Bromyard Tileries , ' Ltd. , stated that he was at work with the deceased and George Green at Brockington Farm , Grendon Bishop , on the 30th of May , and about 12 noon the deceased and Green had just finished sawing through a stick of timber . Green was drawing the saw from under the stick and Moss followed under the stick , when it
