In the course of a letter to Mr. Abbot he says : " I was wounded at Lange- marck , but am glad to say I am going on all right . I was hit on the head and hand . So you see I have returned to Blighty after two years and two months in France . It is quite a treat to get back where it is a bit peaceful I wish to be remembered to all and hope Charlie is getting along all right . " Ite . Kiddle was one of the gardeners at the Castle and was among that numerous body of young men in Kinnersley who at the outbreak of war joined up . He has had some marvel- lous escapes during the past two years in France . At present he is resting and re- covering in a north country hospital . for a while . WEOBLEY MAN KILLED . We regret to state that Mr. James Haynes , of Broad Street , Weobley , has been informed that his son Pte . J. Haynes , K.S.L.I. , was killed in action on September 26th in France . Pte . Haynes who was 36 years of age , was a grocer's assistant at Bridgnorth , having pre- viously been in employment in Leominster and Ludlow . He enlisted in March , 1916 , at Shrewsbury and in due course went out to France . One brother , William Haynes , R. F. A. , has seen considerable service in France , and another brother , Jack , who is in the R.A.M.C. , is about to go abroad . DEATH OF PTE . J. E. MEREDITH . We regret to report the death of Pte . J. E. Meredith , of Ackhill , Presteign , which curred at Worcester Hospital last week as a -00 result of wounds received in action in France . Pte . Meredith joined up about 18 months ago and had seen much service with his regiment , the K.S.L.I. , in France , he having been twice The funeral took place on Friday wounded . last at Ackhill Baptist Church , and was largely attended . The remains were brought to Presteign by the 1.50 train . The service was conducted by the Rev. A. Leitch ( Pastor ) and the deceased's favourite hymns were sung . Two buglers from the deceased's regiment sounded the " Last Post . " The mourners in- cluded the deceased's parents and family , and there was a large number of wreaths sent by many friends . a was A memorial service was held at Ackhill Baptist Church on Sunday , when there was The crowded congregation . service conducted by the Rev. A. Leitch ( the Pastor ) . including hymns , " Lead Kindly Light , " " Brief life is here our portion " and " We shall sleep , but not for ever , " were sung . Mrs. Price ( The Grove ) presided at the Special organ . MEMORIAL SERVICE AT HAMNISH . On Tuesday , 16th inst . , at 7.30 p.m. , a solemn and impressive memorial service for Robert Jarman Edwards , eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Edwards , of Widgeon Hill , was attendance bore witness to the esteem in which the deceased soldier was held . As has already been stated in these columns , he was killed in action on the Western Front on September , 20th . Weste deserved tribute to the character of the sol- African War with Lord Strathcona's Horse , and holds the Queen's Medal with five bars . LEOMINSTER OFFICER'S PROMOTION . In recent military announcements it is stated that Lieut . R. J. Boulton , Herefordshire Regiment , is to be an acting Captain whilst commanding a company . LOCAL LADIES HONOURED . Local ladies appear in the War Office com- munique in which are given the names of ladies who have rendered valuable service in connection with the war . Mrs. A. Windebank is mentioned as a nurse in connection with Sarnesfield Court Auxiliary Hospital , Weobley ; Mrs. D. S. Winter Dryland , as Superintendent of Kington Auxiliary Hospital ; and Miss M. Sara , in connection with Hampton Grange , Beechwood , Sarnesfield and Ross Hospitals . The great amount of really hard but quiet work that has been performed by local ladies purely from patriotic movements , is probably not gen- erally realised . A London paper recently talked a great deal about women shirkers , but the honours we have just mentioned show at any rate that there are many Herefordshire ladies who are sparing no effort in the cause of their country and it is a happy thought on the part of the authorities to recognise the assistance that has been voluntarily given by publishing the names of some of the most note- worthy workers . THE KINGTON TIMES . OCTOBER 27 , 1917 . LUDLOW . COUNTY POLICE COURT . Before Captain O. Every and Mr. H. E. Whitaker . MILK PROSECUTION . One part he himself , and the other part he handed the next morning to Mr. T. P. Blunt , Public Analyst , and on the certificate from Mr. Blunt showing that September 16th he received it was 7 per cent . deficient in fat . After hav- ing received the certificate , he saw and asked him if he could give any explana- tion and defendant replied that the milk from which the sample was taken was fetched from the premises of William John Reece , Wettle- ton Pool , the same morning that the sample was taken . On September 25th he visited Reece's premises and purchased a pint of milk and submitted it to the analyst and on October 2nd he received a certificate showing that the sample was genuine . defendant For the defence the defendant said that he had been in the clothing and drapery trade at Craven Arms 33 years and this business belonged to his son , who started it four years ago . Two years ago he joined up and was wounded mn the Somme and had now gone back to France and he asked his sisters to look , after the milk business .
