ROSS RAILWAYMEN AND
FOOD COMMITTEE .
At Tuesday's meeting of Ross Urban Coun- cil a letter was read from the Ross Railway- men's Union asking that one of their represen- tatives might be elected on the Urban Food Control Committee in the place of Mr. , W. H. Barnwell , a grocer , who has resigned . Mr. Watkins said if they could get men to do the work voluntarily why trouble about getting men who wanted to be paid for all they did in these strenuous times ( Hear , hear ) . He understood that if the railwaymen only came for ten minutes they wanted pay for four hours . Mr. Capewell said the union had sent a letter to Lord Rhondda on this matter , and he would move that the matter stand over until the railwaymen produced their reply from Lord Rhondda as to his opinion on the constitution of the Committee . It was decided to lay the letter on the table until the reply from Lord Rhondda was forthcoming .
ROSS .

A 18. rate would . produce £ 856 , and in giving notice that such a rate should be issued he said that this was 1d . in the less than the last half - year . The estimates were accepted .

ECONOMICAL POULTRY
FEEDS .
By an Order dated 20th of April , 1917 , the Food Controller prohibited the use of sound wheat , rice and rye in any form for feeding poultry . Barley has been requisitioned for human consumption . The Government import . practically all maize and reserve it for the same purpose , so that very little is available for poultry feeding . The use of oats is not prohibited . The amount of this cereal not re- quired for human food is limited , however .
The grains available for feeding poultry are ( a ) tail corn of all descriptions ; ( b ) damaged corn of all descriptions ; ( c ) screen- ings extracted in the milling of wheat and other cereals . The prices of damaged grain , tailings and dressings , harvested in the United Kingdom in 1917 , have been fixed by the Grain ( Prices ) Order , 1917 , made by the Food Controller . There is at present no restriction on the price of tail or damaged corn of foreign origin . Among the latter may be mentioned " frozen wheat , and torpedoed " wheat- This
wheat has usually a salt taste and musty I smell and is therefore unfit for milling , but when mixed with other grain is a suitable and valuable food for poultry . But every effort should be made to economise grain by using increased amounts of meals and vegetables .

Councillor Southall said that he knew of a case where a grocer refused to supply sugar because the person had not registered with him . Councillor Williams said it was compelling people to buy from a particular shop .
Councillor Southall said it should also be known that any householder who did not send in a form by October 6th would find diffi- culty in getting any sugar at all after Janu- ary 1st . If anyone had not received a form
they should apply at the Post Office and send
one in .
The Chairman remarked that many of the forms were wrongly filled up and forms had been sent in without names or addresses . We regret to record the death , which took place suddenly on Monday , of Mr. Giddings , of Ivington . Although he had been ailing for some time he was able to attend church on Sunday , so that his death on the following day was unexpected . The facts were reported to the Coroner , but no , inquest was necessary , deceased having been attended by Dr. Cressy . Mr. Giddings , who was 61 years of age , was a highly respected resident in the
parish in which he came to live 35 years ago
at the age of 26. He worked as a miller dur-
