Black and white photograph of Ross Grammar School's cricket team. The team is named as: Standing: D. A. Dean, J. W. Harris, R. Turner, F. J. Moore, C. G. Longford, W. E. Little, W. R. Hill Seated: J. C. Snell, H. D. Nichols, J. R. Colcombe, J. F. Watkins (capt.), C. F. Babbage, J. L. Davies - C. F. BABBAGE (seated, second from the right) - Cyril Frederick Babbage was born in 1917 at Ludlow, the son of Fred and Beatrice Babbage. The family moved to Ross in 1929 when his father bought a butchers business at 3 Broad Street. In 1938 he joined the newly formed RAF Voluntary Reserve as a sergeant pilot with 602 Squadron. For his gallantry shown during the Battle of Britain, King George VI presented him with the Distinguished Flying Medal. After the war he continued serving in the RAF rising to the rank of Wing Commander. With him having a connection with Ross, on his death in 1976, an obituary appeared on the front page of the Ross Gazette (December 2, 1976). |
