Black and white photograph showing carnival exhibits, including an elephant and a model of the Market House in Ross-on-Wye, An account of the day's activities is given in both of the local newspapers - "The Man of Ross" and "The Ross Gazette". A description of the individual or group characters as it appears in the newspaper report is shown in inverted commas. FATHER CHRISTMAS - MR. HILL "Father Christmas, represented by Mr. Hill (the Crofts)" [POLICEMAN not mentioned in report] MARKET HOUSE - MR. C. TOOTH "Mr. C. Tooth, tricycle, representing the Market-house clock, illuminated, and pointing to the actual hour of starting" TURK - MR. W. BARNWELL "Mr. W. Barnwell, as a Turk, on tricycle decorated. [ST. MARY'S CHURCH not mentioned in report] JOCKEY - EDWARD KENDALL PEARSON "Mr. S. K. Pearson, as a jockey, on tricycle with triple floral arch" The name Edward Kendall Pearson is written in blue ink on the photograph with a line drawn to a man dressed as a jockey. He was born in Ross in 1868 so would have been aged 18/19. The previous year he had started his journalist career with the Hereford Times as their Ross correspondent. A detailed account of his life is given in his obituary which appeared in the Ross Gazette, May 30, 1946. |
