Herefordshire school log books, May 1945.

School log books are a great source of information for local history. They contain daily accounts of school activities, from visits by dentists and school inspectors, to nature walks and sports days. On a wider level, they reflect the communities served by the schools, and local customs and events are recorded in their pages.

In May 1945, Herefordshire, like the rest of the country, was weary of war with all the privations and loss it had brought. When the end came, it was sudden, almost unexpected. This selection of entries conveys the abruptness of the announcement and the response is varied from school to school. In some cases, there is an air of jubilation, but in others, it is as though the shock of peace is just another incident to put on record.
