    Description: Black and white photograph of Rev James Hopton. He lived at Canon Frome Court as rector and patron of the living, he was also a JP. He and his son John Hopton JP commissioned the rebuilding of St James' Church by the Court in 1860. This picture was drawn by J C Moore and then engraved by William Holl, possibly for an obituary as it has ob1871 on the bottom.

    Description: Black and white photograph of Richard Payne Knight, drawn by W Evans and engraved by E Scriven. Richard was born at Wormsley Grange 11th February, 1751, a frail child and home educated, excelling at Greek. in 1773 he started designing Downton Castle on his Bringewood estate, which was to become his lifes work. He was a landscape theorist and was called upon to enhance the picturesque qualities of several estates. He became the MP for Leominster in 1780 and represented Ludlow as MP from 1784 - 1806. He died in London in 1824 and was buried at St Mary's, Wormsley. He bequeathed his collections of bronzes, gems, coins and drawings to the British Museum, of which he was a Trustee.

    Description: Black and white photograph of the portrait of Henry Somerset, first Marquis of Worcester, drawn by William Derby and engraved by T A Dean. The original painting was done by Janson and was held by the Duke of Beaufort. Henry was a staunch Royalist but was taken into custody by the Parliamentary forces in 1646 and died in Covent Garden.

    Description: Black and white photograph of James Wathen at his desk. He was born in Eign Street in 1751 and after his fathers death stayed at home to look after his blind mother until her demise in 1801. He was nicknamed Jemmy Sketch and was a familiar sight around Herefordshire. Luckily he was sketching Hereford Cathedral before the dramatic collapse of the west front including much of the nave. It showed deep cracks on the north-west tower. He then drew anther sketch to show the ruins and had both published in the Gentleman's Magazine and other publications to his profit. He boasted that he was a vegetarian and tea-total. He died in Hereford in 1828 and several of his works are held in Hereford City Library.

    Description: Black and white photograph of Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex, 1541 - 76. Born at Chartley on 16th September, 1541. Walter was the 2nd Viscount Hereford and 10th Baron Ferrers of Chartley. In 1572, Queen Elizabeth I made Walter a Knight of the Garter and Earl of Essex (which had become extinct in 1571) in acknowledgement of his Bourchier ancestry. He died campaigning in Ireland on 22nd September, 1576.

    Description: Black and white photograph of a miniature picture of David Garrick done a few months before his death, by Miss Louisa Lane. She had a novel way of working hair into the portraits that she made. Unfortunately she never completed the task.
