  • Title: All Saints School, Hereford, May 1945

    Type: Manuscript

    Date Published: May 1945

Description: All Saints School, Hereford, log book for May 1945. The entries show that VE day came as a surprise for the population at large following rumours of victory in Europe. The school was prepared to celebrate the momentous event by singing God Save the King. The children were clearly used to such communal activities, having danced around the maypole on 1 May.

  • Title: Dorstone School log book entries, May 1945.

    Type: Manuscript

    Date Published: May 1945

Description: The arrival of VE day at Dorstone seems to have caused no more interest than the arrival of the Dusmo, a popular cleaning product of the time. Such a cursory reference could mean that the local impact of the war was limited or that the outcome of the struggle had been long anticipated.

  • Title: Bishops Frome school log book entries, May 1945.

    Type: Manuscript

    Date Published: May 1945

Description: Local priorities are betrayed here as VE day passes unremarked upon. The pupils were already away from their desks providing essential support in the hop fields.

  • Title: Eye School log book entries, May 1945.

    Type: Manuscript

    Date Published: May 1945

Description: A reference to the delivery of a drum of Jeyes Fluid hints at the head teacher's struggle with school cleanliness in the face of supply shortages. Perhaps the victory that is highlighted in red would bring an end to such restrictions.

  • Title: How Caple school log book entries, May 1945.

    Type: Manuscript

    Date Published: May 1945

Description: This is a page dominated, not by the end of war in Europe, but by the continuing struggle against disease. Mandatory diphtheria vaccination was an essential part of the school calendar as a prevention against a persistent and forgotten condition. Frequent medical, dental and cleanliness inspections show the active role played by the state in child health.

  • Title: Kentchurch school log book entries, May 1945.

    Type: Manuscript

    Date Published: May 1945

Description: The progress of the war is well chronicled in this local account. A vivid description of the approaching victory and the persistent struggle in the Far East is woven into the official record of school numbers and childhood epidemics. It is an upliftingly positive series of entries culminating in the bonfires, music an dancing that were the hallmarks of VE Day. See the transcript in the next window.

  • Title: Orcop school log book entries, May 1945.

    Type: Manuscript

    Date Published: May 1945

Description: It is clear from the last entry on this age that very little notice was given of the two day holiday that accompanied victory in Europe. The normal routine of dental inspections and pupil number returns seems to have been very abruptly interrupted in a way that would surely have caused an administrative headache.

  • Title: Titley school log book entries, May 1945.

    Type: Manuscript

    Date Published: May 1945

Description: Plans made by the school managers at Titley were overtaken by events, which developed rapidly. A decision to limit the forthcoming closure seems to have been overruled by the Government, and the pupils enjoyed the full two days' eave.
