Description:
Black and white photograph showing a woman crouching down to the same height as a small girl. The woman is holding a parcel tied up with string and a bow on the top. The girl has a light coloured (possibly white) box-like apparatus on her torso from which two thin wires lead up to each of her ears. It is attached to a strap which appears to go around her neck and this has been cleverly camouflaged by being covered in the same patterned material as the dress she is wearing.
The occasion is a fund raising event held at the Chasedale Hotel in aid of the National Deaf Children's Society. The woman is actress, Noel Gordon, who played the main character in a daytime television programme called "Crossroads". The girl is Caroline Porter, daughter of Lesley Porter, chairman of the Hereford and Worcester branch of the society, and she is wearing a "phonic ear" which is a radio type deaf aid. The device was secured to the body by straps that went around the neck and waist. Apparently, children found it very heavy.
Sufficient money was raised to purchase a "phonic ear". They cost £600 each.
Noel Gordon lived locally at Weir End Lodge.
