  • Title: Wilton: Wilton Roundabout [August 22, 1974]

    Type: Image

    Date Published: August 22, 1974 - page 5

Description: Black and white photograph showing two lanes of cars and lorries in a long traffic queue. Some of the drivers have got out of their vehicles and are standing on the grass verge. The accompanying article is on a different page from the picture. It appears on the front page and is headed "Traffic in chaos after load shed". An incident on the Wilton Roundabout involving a lorry spilling its load of metal ingots resulted in long traffic queues. It took over three hours for the road to be cleared. The two lanes of traffic indicates the road is a dual carriageway. The A40 approaches Wilton roundabout from either a northeast direction from Monmouth or southwest from the M50/Ledbury. On the right, partially obscured by the first lorry trailer, are two parallel electricity/telephone poles braced together ('H type' pole) which is next to a tiled roof building. In the distance, above the third lorry trailer, a large white house can be seen on the horizon. To the left of this house are trees and a hedge with a gap. An aerial photograph in the "Donovan Wilson Collection" taken when the A40 "Ross Spur" (by-pass) was under construction (1958-60) shows the 'H' type pole and a long barn close to the approach to the Wilton roundabout. Furthermore, the white house and the gap in the hedge around the field can be seen in the distance. The spot from which this photograph was taken can therefore be pinpointed to the central reservation of the A40 dual carriageway south-west bound approaching the Wilton roundabout. The large white house in the distance is "Springfield House" which was demolished in 1984. RELATED ITEMS IN THE HEREFORDSHIRE HISTORY COLLECTION Donovan Wilson Collection Catalogue No. DB5 054 19 Aerial view of "A40 Wilton roundabout on the "Ross Spur" (By-pass).
