The soldier on the left seems to be a quarter-master sergeant with four inverted chevrons on each cuff. The others are wearing frogged patrol jacket and flat square peaked forage caps and kepis. They are wearing full dress uniforms which would have been red with blue trousers. Tunics are buttoned to the neck with a stand-up collar, white belts fastened with a snake clasp and with a leather pouch. One has the insignia of a sergeant, another a corporal. They are shod in hobnail boots and are sitting on, variously, an upturned bucket and a large coffee pot. Their rifles with socket bayonets are stacked up next to them.

He is wearing a tunic with a stand up collar with a metallic shoulder title spelling 'CANADA' and collar badges bearing the Maple Leaf. On the left sleeve is a single Good Conduct chevron and on the right forearm he wears four 'Chevrons for Overseas Service' indicating four years of service. These commenced to be worn around June/July 1918.

The location is the Barracks, Harold St, Hereford. This photograph is identical to G36-316-03 except that the background detail seems sharper.
