After a Sub-Aqua Club had taken some ammunition they had found in the River Wye near Wilton Bridge to Ross Police station, the Army were called in to search the river bed.

The women are participating in a sponsored knit-in to raise funds for Ross Operatic and Dramatic Society (R.O.A.D.S.). They are sat in the window of an empty shop and therefore on view to people passing by.    The shop was formerly Raynors which was a Ladies fashion and fabric shop located in the Market Place. Later in the year the building was demolished after it was deemed structurally unsafe A notice in the window states that the knitted squares would be made into blankets and given to Dean Hill Hospital [now called Ross Community Hospital in Alton Street] From left to right, the women are named as: Mrs. J. The accompanying article is headed "MEMBER FURIOUS AT HORRIFYING RATE INCREASE". The "Member" referred to in the heading is Mr. David Gibson-Watt M.C., M.P. for the Hereford constituency (which took in Ross) who was replying to a letter he had received from Ross Chamber of Commerce. In the letter he expresses his displeasure with the level of increase in the general domestic rates (a predecessor to today's Council Tax) and what action he had taken. He was a Conservative M.P.. In February that year, the Conservatives had lost the general election to the Labour Party. The Town Council's response to the increase was to organise a petition signing event at the Council offices.
