The gentleman on the left is Henry ‘Harry’ Jauncey. Every year in June, since 1876, members of Fownhope Heart of Oak Friendly Society have held their annual Club Walk through the village.

In the photograph, Mr E.Fortescue Grange (aged 88) talks to five-year-old David Gilbert. Mr Fortescue had walked every procession since it’s inception. This is a variation on the more well-known photo, where Mr Grange takes his hat off.

    Description: Boy at the Fownhope Heart of Oak Club walk. In its celebration of Oak Apple Day, the Club's walk was a colourful spectacle. Men and boys only in those days, while women and girls could only watch from the sidelines (even if they were sometimes responsible for creating the decorated stick). The sticks, onto which the floral blooms are tied, were are often considered family heirlooms and are passed down the generations. A variation of this photo appeared in the Sunday Times of June 7th the same year.

    Description: Mrs Violetta Price, taken outside her May Fair show in Commercial Road. Mrs Price came from a family with a long history in the fairground and circus businesses, and together with her husband, Tom, ran a variety of shows that travelled the length and breadth of Britain in the post-war years. After her husband's death in the mid-1950s, Mrs Price continued running the family business, attending such fairs as Hereford, Nottingham Goose Fair and Stratford Mop. She died in her eighties around 1964.
