This painting heavily resembles 'The Astronomer' (also called "Heraklith') by Dutch painter Gerrit Dou, c.1628, which is held in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Notably, Dou became a pupil of Rembrandt in 1628.

The coach is driven by a coachman in livery with top hat and two footmen riding behind. On the left are two trumpeters of King's Shropshire Light Infantry in the role of Assize Court Heralds. The banners have the coat of arms of the High Sheriff of Herefordshire. There are similar photographs in the collection but the livery and horses belong to a different High Sheriff, only the trumpeters are the same.
