  • Title: The Market House (Between 1904-1910)

    Type: Image

Date Published: Between 1904 and 1910

Description: Black and white postcard entitled "OLD MARKET HALL, ROSS" The photgraph is overexposed making it dark and difficult to make out certain details. On the right-hand side of the facing wall of the Market House at ground level is a pillar letter box (the small white square is most likely to be the collection times notice). Prior to 1904, it had been postioned further out in the road. To the left of and behind the Market House in what is Market Place, is a shop sign saying "10 Sacret 10". This shop was run by a Mr. Ernest. S. Sacret who advertised his business in the Ross Gazette as an "Up-to-date" Draper and Furnisher. It occupied 9, 10, 11 & 12 Market Place from late-1900 to late-1910. This photograph, therefore, must have been taken sometime between 1904 and 1910. High above the road on the right is a sign "Smith & Watson". This was an ironmongers shop at 39 High Street. RELATED ITEMS IN THE HEREFORDSHIRE HISTORY COLLECTION. NEWSPAPERS: Ross Gazette May 5, 1904 (page 4) Ross Urban District Council Surveyor's Report...the Postmaster had removed the pillar letter box on the west side of the Townhall and had refixed it near the building. [Note that at the time, the Market House served as the Townhall]. September 29, 1910 (Front page) E. S. Sacret begs to announce that he is Relinquishing his Business...and will shortly offer his Entire Stock...for Absolute Sale... November 7, 1910 (Front page) Last Three Days...Sacret's Sale...Premises will be closed on Monday. IMAGES: Herefordshire Image Collection In the "Ross-on-Wye images" of the above collection is a sub-collection of Ross-on-Wye postcards. This contains a postcard catalogued as "1071 Ross-on-Wye Market Hall" which shows the position of the pillar letter box before it was moved nearer to the Market House in 1904.

The men are wearing caps, bowlers and boaters; the woman are wearing enormous "picture hats" decorated with flowers or feathers. The accompanying article headed "ROSS WHOLESALE FRUIT AND VEGETABLE MARKET" The man wearing a flower in his jacket lapel is auctioneer Mr. George B. Kemp. There was 500 lots of fruit, vegetables and trees and this was the third such sale to be held at the Cattle Market. Observations: There is a face at the back which has been blanked out of the photograph. Buyers needed to be sure the produce was fresh. • Title: Dr. Henry Duckworth: Wife with child in a Nursing Home 1921 or 1924

    Type: Image

    Date Published: unknown

Description: Black and white photograph showing a maternity ward. In 1926 Mrs Duckworth appeared in a picture in the Ross Gazette (February 11, 1926, page 7) when she played the role of "The Duchess" in a Ross Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society production of "King of Cadonia". That picture confirms the woman in the corner bed of this photograph is Dr. Duckworth's wife, Sylvia. Dr and Mrs Duckworth had three children - two daughters and a son. Both of their daughters, Joan and Sylvia, were born in Cheltenham. Their son, John, was born in Ross. The children's birth announcements appeared in the Ross Gazette (publication date and page number in brackets): JOAN FLORENCE ANNA (July 14 1921, page 5) "DUCKWORTH.- July 10, in the Royal Parade, Cheltenham, the wife of H. L. D'Olier Duckworth, M.B., 6, St. Mary's Street, Ross, a daughter." SYLVIA IRENE (January 3 1924, page 5) "DUCKWORTH. - December 30, at the Imperial Nursing Home, Cheltenham, the wife of H.L.D'olier Duckworth, M.B., 6, St. Mary's Street, of a daughter." JOHN ALEXANDER D'OLIER (February 7 1929, page 5) "DUCKWORTH. - On January 31st to Sylvia wife of H. L. D'Olier Duckworth , B.A., M.B., a son." Unlike his sisters, the name of the hospital/nursing home where he was born is not specified. His birth detail records at Herefordshire Archives and Record Centre give his place of birth as "Nursing Home, Ross". This implies he was not born at The Cottage Hospital or Alton Street Hospital. It could also not be the Maternity Home at 46 Broad Street as this had closed in March 1928. Mrs. Duckworth looks younger in this photograph than in photograph No.1. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the baby she is holding is either Joan or Sylvia. In conclusion, this photograph was most likely taken in either the Royal Parade or the Imperial Nursing Home (now called Imperial House) in Cheltenham and not in Ross.
