The management of poor relief had recently changed and the old tradition of yule tide largess was abandoned in the interests of economy. It was resolved that although 'this board feel themselves altogether precluded from departing from the usual dietary [bread and gruel] on Christmas day,' benefactors from outside the board could contribute towards a better feast.
