Two are wearing scarlet jackets with black facings and with old style, short shakos (extreme left and second right). The number 7 denotes the 7th Battalion, based in Kington. The soldier on the left seems to be a quarter-master sergeant with four inverted chevrons on each cuff. The others are wearing frogged patrol jacket and flat square peaked forage caps and kepis. They are wearing full dress uniforms which would have been red with blue trousers. Tunics are buttoned to the neck with a stand-up collar, white belts fastened with a snake clasp and with a leather pouch. One has the insignia of a sergeant, another a corporal. They are shod in hobnail boots and are sitting on, variously, an upturned bucket and a large coffee pot. Their rifles with socket bayonets are stacked up next to them.
