The older man on the left appears to be a country man with a Newgate Fringe beard, dressed in overcoat, double breasted jacket, muffler, and a Homburg hat. It looks bitterly cold and their expressions are sombre. In the background is the gatehouse of the Bishop’s Palace, Hereford, which was opposite Bustin Studios.

    Description: Black and white half length photograph of officer wearing Service Dress cap with the crest of the City of Hereford (discontinued in 1915) also tunic, collar and tie with tie pin. Tunic has scalloped edge pockets on the breast and square pockets below the waist. On the reveres of the jacket are the badges of the Herefordshire Regiment. The jacket cuffs have a decorative lace work denoting rank, suggesting this was an early wartime photograph and that his rank was Second Lieutenant. He wears a Sam Browne belt, is resting on a cane, holding gloves and wearing a wristwatch.

    Description: A black and white photograph of nine soldiers and an officer wearing slouch hats outside the Drill Hall (which has since been demolished), Friars Street, Hereford. The officer is wearing a darker hat, four pocket tunic with pleated breast pockets, a stand and fall collar and a leather rifle belt. The others are in tunics with upright collars, two pockets below the waist, white belts, trousers, puttees and Ammo boots with hobnails. There is a bugler in the front row and on the right a soldier has a bayonet hanging from his belt. They all have swagger sticks and shoulder flashes “1HF”, indicating they are from the First Battalion of the Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers.

    Description: A black and white photograph of a Flight Lieutenant of the Royal Air Force. He is wearing a uniform jacket with pilot's insignia and a row of medal ribbons, also breeches and riding boots. The insignia above the rank braid is a small crown above an eagle (not albatross, the Air Ministry Orders of that time were quite specific about the bird's description).The uniform the RAF officer wears is a fist pattern introduced upon the RAF's formation and is Khaki in colour (not blue as usually associated with the RAF) (Source:Britairforce.com). He is leaning against the backcloth of a panelled room which appears in many later Bustin portraits.
