Some have wound stripes, introduced in 1916 and good conduct stripes, a few have medal ribbons. Several, including the officers are wearing the soft peaked caps introduced in 1915. The men are photographed against the background of a brick building with a double flight of steps leading to the entrance. The mood is relaxed and the men are smiling. In view of the age of most, this could have been taken at a Depot somewhere.

The only schools in Herefordshire with OTCs were Hereford Cathedral School and Lucton School.

Efficiency stripes were introduced in autumn 1917 and involved the nurse being certificated as efficient so this may explain the scroll she is holding.
