It became the seat of Robert Biddulph Phillips Esq in 1805 when the Walwyn family sold it to their uncle when the family line only had females left. These details were left to Herefordshire Libraries in 1930 by Mr Allan H Bright.

In 1912, the Magistrates challenged the renewal of the licence as the building was deemed to be structurally unsafe with poor ventilation. The Council at the time had plans to widen Bewell Street.
