    Date Published: 1934

Description: Black and white photograph of Michael Cardew demonstrating his craft at Winchcombe Pottery, Gloucestershire, 1934. Photographed by Miss M Wight. Between 1800 and 1914, Greet Pottery or Becketts Pottery (as it was known then), produced a range of farmhouse ware for the surrounding area. After the end of the war the pottery did not reopen and was sold to a local farmer (Alfred Butler) in 1923. In 1926 Michael Cardew (who had been training under Bernard Leach the last three years) rented the pottery buildings (including the bottle kiln) and with the help of two locals, Elijah Comfort (aged 63 and the chief thrower from before the closure) and Sydney Tustin (nearly 14 and and fit and willing) set about restarting the pottery.

  • Title: Bosbury Church and Tower

    Type: Image

    Date Published: unknown

Description: Black and white photograph of Bosbury Church and Tower. The massive detached tower at Bosbury was built about 1230-1240. It is likely that most were built as a defence against Welsh incursions. Bosbury’s tower with its thick walls and narrow slit windows was almost certainly built as a refuge. The tower, 8.8 m (29feet) square and 14.6m (48feet) high to the top of the parapet wall, has walls which are nearly 1.8m (6feet) thick at the lowest level. Originally the tower had a spire, which was struck by lightening in 1638 and replaced with the present pitched roof and weather vane in 1812 The main entrance door has recently been replaced to provide a more wind and weather tight structure but the previous door has been preserved in the church along the north wall and is a fine example of the skills of craftsman of previous times.
