A DROP in the number of
recorded shoplifting of-
fences in the busy run—up to
Christmas in Hereford has
been attributed to the new
Facewatch scheme.
According to the latest
retail crime level figures
supplied by West Mercia
Police, shoplifting in mid-
December was down by 26
per cent compared to the
same time last year.
In December 2014 there
were 35 offences recorded
and last month this was
down to 26.
The news comes just
as Facewatch is being
launched in Ross-on-Wye-
after being launched in
Hereford in the summer.
The online portal provides
a secure place for police
and businesses to share in-
formation to tackle low»lev-
e1 crime ~ such as sharing
images of offenders.
Inspector Robert Barnett
of the Herefordshire Safer
Neighbourhood Team,
said: “Facewatch truly is
a partnership approach
and receives support from
many police forces across
the UK, a large number
of high street chains, the
CPS and Crimestoppers, to
name a few. It has innumer-
able possibilities to protect
businesses from potential
troublemakers and crimi-
nal activity.”
It is expected to save nu-
merous hours of officer
time that would be spent
visiting premises and se—
curing and processing
CCTV images.
Facewatch allows users
to submit images and gen-
erate crime reports easily
and quickly, which are sub-
mitted to officers.
Mike Truelove, operations
manager at Hereford Busi-
ness Improvement District,
said: “Although uptake was
sporadic at first, those ear-
ly adopters have seen some
great results.
“In fact, one major retailer
