A LEDBURY woman who died after pull—
ing into the path of a lorry may have
mistaken the accelerator pedal for the
brake, an inquest heard.
Sylvia Gummery. 64, had been leaving
a property on the A449 at Preston Cross
near Ledbury when she was in collision
with the lorry which was “five to ten me-
tres away”.
An inquest held at Hereford Town Hall
heard Mrs Gummery suffered multiple
injuries and later died.

Wooderson, said no drugs
or alcohol were detected
in her body following toxi-
cology reports.
Eyewitness Jannette
Presley said the lorry was
“about five to ten metres”
from the junction when
Mrs Gummery pulled out.
The collision happened
about 3.20pm on July 10
as Mrs Gummery, who
lived in Woodleigh Road,
Ledbury, was leaving the
property with a friend,
Pamela Weaver.
She told Mr Wooderson
her friend was a cautious
driver.
Lorry driver Arnold
Rowland provided a writ—
ten statement saying “I
don’t believe there was an
ything I could have done
to avoid the accident,” he
said.
Police examination
showed Mr Rowland was
travelling at 45mph before
the collision - the limit on
the road being 50mph -
and 33mph on impact.
At that rate, collision in-
vestigator PC Mark Mur-
phy said the lorry would
have been visible to Mrs
Gummery for six seconds.
He said a possible scenar-
io was that Mrs Gummery
pressed the accelerator
while waiting to pull out
instead of the brake.
Records showed Mr Row-
land had been driving for
four hours and 48 min
utes without a break, but
PC Murphy was satisfied
he would not have been
fatigued enough for it to
have impaired his driving.
Mr Wooderson recorded
the medical cause of death
as multiple injuries and
concluded Mrs Gummery
died as a result of a road
traffic collision.

Scammers target towns
A SPATE of phone call
scams has led to police
issuing a warning.
Residents have been tar-
geted in Herefordshire,
with Bromyard being a
particular target.
Calls have also been
reported in Kington, Ross-
on—Wye, Ledbury and
Marden.
Scammers typically tar
get elderly or vulnerable
people by pretending to be
from the police and telling
them their bank card has
been used fraudulently.
Often the callers have
stated they are from the
MET police, but they have
also claimed they are from
West Mercia Police, M16
or the fraud squad.
Detective Chief
Inspector Tim Bower said
realdents should never
hand out any personal
details over the phone and
remember police or banks
Will never ask for a PIN, a
money transfer or send a
courier to collect cards.
