New Year Honours
Among all the musicians, sports stars and Government advisers gaining royal
recognition in last week’s New Year's Honours list were a number of less well-
known but equally deserving recipients.
Hereford Times reporters have been speaking to some of those who, some may
argue, merit more for going above and beyond the call - not for financial gain,
but simply for the good of others within their community.
Roger Brigh
Councillor proud
to pick up award
A TOWN councillor has been
awarded a British Empire Med-
al for his service to Knighton.
Roger Bright. 84. was recog-
nised in the New Year Honours
for his voluntary service to the
community in Knighton and
District Powys. He has been
a town councillor for 23 years
and mayor five times.
Councillor Bright said: “I feel
honoured and proud to receive
this award.“
He first became a commit
tee officer in the mid 19405,
when he was joint secretary
of Knighton youth club with
about 80 members.
In the 1950s he became vice
chairman of Knighton Scout
committee and went on to serve
on Knighton show and carnival
committee for 25 years.
He has served with many
other groups in the town and
chaired many committees.
Cllr Bright was born in
Knighton and has lived there
all of his life, except when he
was called into the RAF in 1949.

MANY people would be
too busy running a live
stock farm to do much
else but John and Shirley
Hanson have found the
time to help 300 children
at their lvington home.
The couple were last
week given MBEs in
recognition of the four
decades they have spent
fostering some of the
county’s most vulnerable.
And despite being over
the Government‘s retire-
ment age, the pair are still
looking after youngsters.

Greta Beresford
A WOMAN was awarded
an MBE for her work over-
seas improving midwifery
practices.
Greta Beresford, from
Almeley, was recognised
in the diplomatic ser-
Shirley, 69, even man-
aged to help deliver one
of her foster children’s
babies last year when an
ambulance failed to reach
their house in time. She
said that was just one of
many amazing moments
to happen at the livestock
farm they call home.
John, who is 73 and was
born on the farm, and
Shirley have two boys of
their own and adopted a
daughter. It was the adop-
tion, Shirley added, that
triggered the whole “fos—
tering” process.
“We‘ve had some really
troubled youngsters com-
ing here from Hereford
and at first they would
always tell us how they
weren’t going to like it on
a farm," she said.
“But after staying here
for a day they settle in and
really like it. Anyway, we
always say it doesn’t mat-
ter where you live, but
who you live with.”
Many of those fostered
by the Hansons credit the
couple with saving them
from a life of drugs — and
an even larger number
are still in contact with
the couple now.
And Shirley, who admits
life gets pretty busy dur-
ing lambing season, has
no plans to stop fostering
anytime soon.
“As a farmer you can be a
bit of a hermit,” she add—
ed. “But there’s no chance
of getting lonely here.”

Services to improving
midwifery principally in
Russia, Uzbekistan and
Azerbaijan.
The safe childbirth co-
ordinator said: “I was
delighted. You just go
through life not expecting
that anything is going to
happen.”
Mrs Beresford has
worked overseas since
1995 for HealthProm, a
UK international devel-
opment charity which
works to ensure vulner—
able children get the best
startinlife.
In the former Soviet
countries all professional
associations had been
dismantled and the state
dictated the parameters
of clinical care, which
included outdated prac-
tices.
in 1995, HealthProm ex-
panded its activities in
Russia to include a safe
childbirth programme,
mtroducing seminars
for doctors and midwives
with the aim of improv-
ing skills and knowledge.
Mrs Beresford said: “It
was about the promotion
of health in the former
Sov1et Union. I was invit—
ed to go to Russia first of
all. Baby death was very
high.”
“Mrs Beresford added:
Somehmes the places we
had to stay in were less
than salubrious. We were
a char1ty and we had to
raise money. I worked in
the places that wanted us
and did the job.”
