Organised by former
soldier Paul Morrisroe
the second Wheels on the
Western Front ride will
take place between July 31
and August 6, and 60 rid—
ers have already pledged
to take on the challenge.
Each rider must pay a
£150 registration fee and
raise a minimum of £1,250
by June.
“In September 1916, be-
tween 200 and 300 Here-
the first Wheels on the Western Front rlde In 2014
fordshire men were trans-
ferred to the 11th Border
Regiment and we lost so
many of these men in the
Somme campaign,” said
Mr Morrisroe.
“Within weeks they were
fighting in the final battle
of the 1916 Somme opera-
tion fought at Redan Ridge
where 54 of them were
killed.
“We will be following the
route of the Herefordshire
men who lost their lives,
when you see the battle
fields it puts it all into per-
spective.”
Mr Morrisroe organised
the first Wheels on the
Western Front ride in 2014
which commemorated
the centenary of the start
of the First World War
and raised a staggering
£122,000, but he hopes to
raise more next year.
After spending six years
in the armed forces, Mr
Morrisroe was inspired
to organise the fundrais-
ing rides after visiting the
French battlefields on a
trip with his wife.
He said: “While over
there I went running and
went though the quiet
fields where these battles
took place.
“So I came up with the
idea of raising money and

ABF at the time.
“Somebody she knew
was doing a similar chal-
lenge so it all went from
there and I had an ex-
army officer plan all the
logistics.”
Next year’s route will
see the fundraisers taking
an anti—clockwise route
through northern France,
visiting the important
sites of the Somme battle-
fields.
Following the route of
Kitchener’s army they
will ride from the disem‘
barkation points. passing
Haig‘s Headquarters to
the railhead of Amiens
before heading into the
Somme battlefields for
two days.
Heading north into Bel—
gium the cyclists will visit
the Ypres Salient and then
Calais for the ferry home.
Along the route, histori-
an Andy Robertshaw will
be driving ahead of the cy~
clists and stopping along
the way to tell them about
the historical significance
of the fields they are pass-
ing through.
The ride is the second of
three Wheels on the West-
ern Front events. with the
final one planned to take
place in 2018 to commemo-
