Hotel granted new licence
five months after attack
A LEOMINSTER hotel
has been granted a new
licence, five months af-
ter losing it following a
serious assault.
Bosses at the Royal
Oak on South Street
have been battling to re-
instate the licence for
some time but had pre-
viously failed to meet
the requirements of a
Heret‘ordshire Council
committee.
However. this week, the
Regulatory Sub<Com~
mirtee agreed to the li-
cence. although commits
tee chairman, Cllr Dave
Greenow. had some
stern words for appli-
cant Charmain Brooke.
“it was August last year
when this started and
the process has been a
huge cost to the public
purse," he said. "This is
a chance for you anti 1
hope you take it.“
The matter was de-
ferred before Christmas
for Ms Brooke to submit
a tire safety order.
At Monday's meeting
at Hereford Shirehall
the council‘s legal advi-
sor, Mike Jones, said the
committee was satisfied
the requirements had
been met.
Speaking afterwards,
Ms Brooke said she was
happy the licence had
been granted.
The venue has been
open since Christmas
on Temporary Event No—
tice‘s but can now open
permanently.
Its licence was revoked
on August 13 after a DJ
was seriously assaulted
in a bottle attack while
trying to break up a fight
in the hotel's basement
Bar 44. Since then CCTV
has been installed.

Fridges were stolen, court is told
A MAN stole two fridges worth
£1,000 each from a Hereford
factory after “thinking they
were scrap”.
Leon John Abbey, 27, from
Corporation Road, Tipton,
admitted taking the refrigera-
tion units from the Rotherwas
Industrial Estate.
Clare Linehan, prosecuting
at Hereford Magistrates Court
last week, said that at 4pm on
September 27 the defendant
was seen on the industrial es-
tate with his father driving a
van.
They were then seen loading
the fridges into the van before
driving off.
The company’s installation
manager saw that the fridges
were missing and viewed the
CCTV recording to get the reg-
istration number of the van,
leading to Abbey’s arrest.
“When interviewed Abbey
said he was driving past and
didn’t think they belonged to
anyone,” said Mrs Linehan.
Chris Morgan, mitigating
said that Abbey thought they
were scrap.
