A SHOW featuring ‘anything
extraordinary with wheels’
will raise money for two
county charities.
The custom car show, organ.
ised by the county’s Cross
Cruisers and American Car
Club, is lined up for next Au«
gust and will mark 30 years
since the club held its first
show.
Celebrating a range of vehi-
cles with wheels and a custom
design, the show will raise
money for St Michael’s Hos~
pics and the Midlands Air
Ambulance.
Joe Weston. from the club,
explained: “We started as a
club in the November before
our first show with eight
members. It was a bit of a
whim really. A couple of mem-
bers had talked to people who
had talked to other people and
it got round to a few people
in other motor related things
and that‘s where it started.
“We all turned up at the Mor-
timer’s Cross in November
and thought ‘this is a good

idea’ and would meet once a
month as it was then. It went
from once a month to basical-
ly once a week.
“We are a group of like-
minded people who are into
our cars, bikes and anything
with wheels and an engine
which is out of the ordinary.
None of our stuff is standard.
“We will take a very small
car and put an exceptionally
big engine in it. One man has
a Moggie Minor with a four-
litre motor in it.”
The club now has around
50 members, including Andy
Gough from Leintwardine,
who holds the current record
for the fastest rocket pro-
pelled go-kart.
Once the club had been
formed, it decided to hold
its first show, which raised
£1,000 for the children’s ward
at Hereford County Hospital.
Next year’s event will mark
30 years since the fundraising
shows began.
“We invite other people to
come along with whatever
they have got, whether it’s
American, custom or older
19305, 403 and 505 cars ~ which
would never have had big en—
gines in,” said Mr Weston.
There is then a ‘show and
shine’, a drive through local
towns and villages and the
show then opens to the public
on Sunday.
“It’s an appreciation really
of What people have built,
bought or whatever else be-
cause all these things are
hand built really,” he added.
Entry to the car show, at
Mortimer’s Cross pub on Au-
gust 6 and 7, 2016, will cost £5
each but is free for those un-
der the age of 12.

soring the show or finding out

Residents unite to thank woman
WHAT started as a heart-
warming television advert led
to one Hay-on-Wye resident re—
ceiving their weekly shop free.
Residents of the border town
were asked to give nomina-
tions for a deserving member
of their community to receive
a bag full of goods from the
town’s Co-operative store in
Newport Street.
And Eileen Bufton was select-
ed as the most deserving for
her efforts supporting a num-
+
ber of charities and organisa-
tions despite being blind.
The competition was inspired
by the supermarket’s winter
television advert which fo—
cussed on kindness.
Following on from the idea,
Hay 00-01) Community Pio-
neer, Gareth Ratcliffe, asked
for nominations from the com-
munity for someone in the
town who deserved a special
“thank you” through a bag of
free products.
He said: “Community spirit
is strong in Hay and, as a com-
munity retailer, it was great to
offer people locally a chance to
acknowledge this.
“The recipient of the bag-
full of Co-op goodies received
a number of nominations of
‘thanks’ — being blind has not
stopped Mrs Bufton from be-
ing an advocate of the Hay
community and supporting
charities and organisations
including St Mary’s Church."
