Minister listens
THE Secretary of State
for Energy and Climate
Change said a visit to Le-
ominster reminded her
of the breadth of services
that help the elderly to keep
their independence.
Amber Rudd visited the
town’s Age UK office last
Friday ahead of a discus-
sion at the Rankin Club on
energy and climate change
that evening.
Ms Rudd heard about the
work carried out by volun-
teers for the Herefordshire -
charity, with projects rang-
ing from toenail clipping to
social events for the elderly.
Ms Rudd said: “It’s been
interesting hearing about
the breadth of the different
things done here.
“I came to find out about
issues of energy bills and
how people on low incomes
manage what help they
need but it’s been interest-
ing hearing about the dif-
ferent ideas you have and
different events to support
people across a broad area.”
Ms Rudd said people tend-
ed to think of practicalities
about energy bills and how
people will stay warm but
that she had been reminded
of the other services that
are equally important to
the older population.
She also met 78-year-old
Phyllis Jacks who has been
volunteering with the char-
ity for 25 years.
Ms Rudd also visited Croft
Castle to officially open
i to concerns of

one of the National Trust’s
renewable energy pilot
projects e part of a £3.5mil-
lion scheme launched with
green energy company
Good Energy in 2013.
Ms Rudd toured the estate
and saw the new biomass
heating system which pro-
vides around 75 per cent of
the property’s heating.
The biomass boilers use
woodchip from the estate to
heat the castle, shop and of-
fices. and have replaced the
old oil-based system saving
19,500 litres of oil each year,
52 tonnes of CO 2 and re-
moved the risk of contami-
nation from oil leaks.
The amount of heat pro-
vided is equivalent to the
heat used in around 12 av-
erage UK houses. Heating
bills have been cut by £6,000
each year.
Ms Rudd said: “It’s great to
see investment in this kind
of technology and I wish

dience of interested people
on the issues of climate
change and energy at an
event at the Rankin Club in
Leominster, speaking for 20
minutes before answering
questions.
