Quiet night
AMBULANCE stafi in Herefordshire
were the quietest in the West
Midlands as party goers saw in the
New Year more sensibly than in other
counties.
New figures released this week
show that more ambulance crews
were on duty for a New Year than
ever before, helping to keep the resi-
dents ot the county sale.
It meant the ambulance service
was in a strong position to deal with
the expected influx of calls with more
alcoholrelated calls including
assaults, falls and unconscious
patients
However. between 8pm and mid—
night, there were only 22 triple nine
calls in the county compared to 68 in
Worcestershire and 634 across the
whole Of the West Midlands.
Herefordshire ambulance crews
were just as quiet from between mid—
night and 4am with only 25 emergen-
cy calls received.
This was compared to 68 in
Worcestershire and 995 across the
whole of the region.

POEMS will be heard in
Ledbury today as part
of a worldwide reading
and mark of solidarity
against a death penalty
passed on a young poet
in Saudi Arabia.
Ashraf Fayadh was
sentenced to death by
a Saudi court last No-
vember for the crime of
apostasy (renouncing
Islam).
The 35-year»old Pales-
tinian poet and art cura»
tor was denied access to
a lawyer throughout his
detention and trial, and
he denies any wrongdo-
ing.
This afternoon. Led—
bury Poetry Festival
will join other protests
across the globe in high—
lighting the
and will call for Western
governments to inter-
vene.
The event has been or»
injustice -
Herefordshire residents can join the worldwide reading in Ledbury today from
1pm
ganised by the Interna-
tional Literature Festi-
val Berlin.
Besides renouncing
Islam, Mr Fayadh also
stands accused of blas-
pheming and promot-
ing atheism through his
collection of poetry, In~
structions Within, pub-
lished in 2008.
Campaigners for Mr
Fayadh’s release say the
charges, coupled with
the lack of due legal pro-
cess, show it is not him
who is guilty, but Saudi
Arabia, for disregarding
human rights and the
rule of law.
Protesters are demand
ing that the UK and US
governments intervene
on behalf of Mr Fayadh
as a first step towards
pressuring Saudi Ara—
bia to raise its human
rights standards and re-
lease him.
Herefordshire resi-
dents can join the world-
wide reading in Ledbury
at 1pm today.
The solidarity action
will take place under the
Market House and will
see the participation of
local poets, including
Sara-Jane Arbury.
