Bogus calls
A WARNING has been issued by
the police after officers received
reports of three scam phone calls
in one afternoon this week.
The calls were made between
3pm and 3.30pm on Monday to
victims in Bromyard and Marcie. .
Each time. the caller claimed to
be from the Metropolitan police
and told the victims their card had
been used fraudulently in London.
Fortunately, each of the victims
realised it was a scam and did not
hand any details over to the person
they were speaking to.
Previously, however, scammers
have been known to ask people to
assist the police by transferring
money to what they claim is a
secure police account“, or send
couriers to collect bank cards.
Police are urging people to
remain vigilant and to ensure no
personal details are given over the
phone.
Club’s party
THE 200 revellers at Hereford
Lions Club’s annual New Year's
Eve party helped raise almost
21,500 to aid the Victims of the
Cumbrian floods.
A raffle for a wheelbarrow full of
festive drinks raised 2745. an
amount doubted by match funding
from Barclay's Bank.
Colin Smith, club president, said:
‘We have all been shocked by the
terrible tragedy which has hit
Cumbria and other areas in the
north and everyone at the party
wanted to support all those families
whose homes and possessions
have been mined in the floods."

Cop ran
for life to
avoid car
A POLICE officer had to
run for his life from a speed-
ing car which failed to stop
at a road closure.
Luke Abbots, 21. of Eliza-
beth Road, Kington, pleaded
guilty at Hereford Magis-
trates’ Court last Thursday
to dangerous driving, hav-
ing no MOT and having a
defective tyre during the
incident on November 14.
Mark Soper, prosecuting,
said that the A438 near
Swainshill was closed by
police officers shortly be-
fore 6am after an earlier ac~
cident.
One of the officers was on
the Brecon side of the road
in a marked car with lights
on to warn motorists of the
closure.
“Abbots was driving his
car at high speed, estimated
to be in excess of 90 miles
per hour, and didn’t stop,
although the brake lights
were seen as being active,”
said Mr Soper.

“Police saw that the on—
coming vehicle did slow
but an officer had to run for
fear of being hit. The vehi-
cle narrowly missed the po-
lice vehicle before colliding
with a kerb.
“The officer was very
shaken and Abbots’ car
came to a halt on its own.”
When the defendant’s car
was examined, the front
tyre was defective with
metal wiring exposed.
Philip Cornet, defending,
said: “It wasn’t Abbots’ in-
tention to use the vehicle
as a weapon but he couldn’t
stop himself.”
Magistrates adjourned
sentencing until later this
month for a full probation
report to be drawn up.
