Bolshoi Babylon (PG) IN December 2018, Bolshoi Ballet soloist Pavel Dmitrichenko received a six-year jail sentence for throwing sulphuric acid in the face of the theatre’s artistic director, Sergei Filin, outside his Moscow flat. In the wake of devastating media coverage and newspa— per headlines, the Bolshoi allowed cameras backstage to document the day-to-day activities of the cultural institution. Filmmakers Nick Read and Mark fianchetti are granted unparalleled behind-the- scenes access and capture rare and intimate footage of the dancers as they show- case their extraordinary artistic and athletic talents in a crucible of ruthless ambition. Overcoming their abiding fear of injury, danc- ers risk everything to impress choreographers and senior staff to ensure their place in Russia’s glit— tering cultural firmament.
