The Hateful Eight (18)
Writer-director Quentin
Tarantino’s eighth film is a
gritty period piece set short-
ly after the American Civil
War, which is bookmarked
into six blood~spattered
chapters and follows bounty
hunter John Ruth (Kurt
Russell) as he escorts pris-
oner Daisy Domergue
(Jennifer Jason Leigh) to
Red Rock where she will be
tried and hanged for mur-
der. She is handcuffed to
Ruth and occasionally feels
his wrath when she dares to
shoot off her mouth. As the
bounty hunter and Daisy
trek through the rural wilds
of Wyoming, they are
engulfed by a blizzard and
seek refuge in a stagecoach
lodge called Minnie’s
Haberdashery. The owner,
Minnie Mink (Dana
Gourrier), is away visiting
her mother, so Bob (Demian
Bichir) is running the estab-
lishment in her absence.
Other lodgers include rival
bounty hunter Major
Marquis Warren (Samuel L
Jackson), town hangman
Oswaldo Mobray (Tim
Roth), quiet and unassum-
ing cowboy Joe Gage
(Michael Madsen) and for-
mer Confederate General
Sandy Smithers (Bruce
Dern). Town sheriff Chris
Mannix (Walton Goggins) is
also present, hoping to keep
the peace. With a sizeable
bounty on Daisy’s head, trig—
ger fingers become itchy
and Ruth faces a battle of
bullets and wits to cling onto
his valuable prisoner.
Bolshoi Babylon (PG)
IN December 2018, Bolshoi
Ballet soloist Pavel
Dmitrichenko received a
six-year jail sentence for
throwing sulphuric acid in
the face of the theatre’s
artistic director, Sergei
Filin, outside his Moscow
flat. The trial exposed bitter
rivalries and protracted in-
fighting at the Bolshoi, one
of Russia’s most famous bal-
let and opera companies. In
the wake of devastating
media coverage and newspa—
per headlines, the Bolshoi
allowed cameras backstage
to document the day-to-day
activities of the cultural
institution. Filmmakers
Nick Read and Mark
fianchetti are granted
unparalleled behind-the-
scenes access and capture
rare and intimate footage of
the dancers as they show-
case their extraordinary
artistic and athletic talents
in a crucible of ruthless
ambition. Overcoming their
abiding fear of injury, danc-
ers risk everything to
impress choreographers
and senior staff to ensure
their place in Russia’s glit—
tering cultural firmament.
Partisan (15)
GREGORI (Vincent Cassel)
is the self-anointed leader of
a closed commune in an iso-
lated compound which
includes several women and
their children. As the only
man in the cult, Gregori
adopts the role of surrogate
father to the youngsters and
he warps their moral com-
passes by training them to
kill using paintball guns in
place of real weapons.
Separated from the outside
world, the children accept

this conditioning without
question and are primed for
senseless violence. Eleven-
year-old Alexander (Jeremy
Chabriel) lives in the com-
mune with his pregnant
mother Susanna (Florence
Mezzara) and has been
moulded into a pint-sized
assassin by Gregori. When
another boy called Leo (Alex
Balaganskiy). who has
3 recently arrived with his
mother (Katalin Hegedus),
protects a defenceless chick-
en from slaughter,
Alexander begins to ques-
tion the killing of all ani-
mals including humans.
This curiosity eventually
pits the boy against Gregori,
who does not tolerate defi-
ance of his teachings.
