Starting early this year, eight PCSOs from Her- efordshire and Shropshire will begin their training to become on~call fire of- ficers for their respective fire services. They will be released from their policing duties for five weeks to complete their training and if the scheme is judged a suc- cess it will be rolled out further. But Cllr Bob Matthews, who represents the Cre- denhill ward on Her- efordshire Council, said the scheme should not go ahead as PCSOs should be left to get on with their job. He said: “For the last few years, the police have been repeatedly telling us that they are grossly un- derfunded and so short- staffed that they find it dif- ficult to fulfil their duties. “In fact, they recently informed parish council clerks that PCSOs would no longer be available to attend their meetings due to lack of manpower, and that their attendances at most incidents would be extremely limited in fu- ture. “It is therefore unbeliev- able that they are now suddenly able to provide PCSO officers firstly to at- tend a five-week training course and then releasing them from their regular employment at short no- tice whenever required, sometimes for long peri- ods.” PCSOs are uniformed po- lice staff whose role is to support the work of police officers within the com- munity. Mark Yates, chief fire officer, said in his report that the initiative was agreed between the fire service and West Mercia Police. His report from the full authority's December meeting said there were 14 initial applicants leading to eight successful PCSO candidates and it is hoped they will be responding to be part of their fire crews by April. He said the candidates have been subject to the same level of entry re- quirements but by work- ing with West Mercia Po~ lice, they have managed to speed up the process. Candidates on the pilot scheme are volunteers from Hereford City, Leom- inster and parts of Shrop- shire. New arrivals with the New Year jug-“h 7'4 ,3 :4 And it will be double trouble for one couple after welcoming twin girls, Sophie who weighed 4le, and Fern who weighed 31bs 100z, at 5.12pm and 5.14pm on New Year’s Day. Their birth, at Hereford County Hospital, also doubles the number of identical twins in the family as mum, Dawn Edey, is also one. She said: “Our baby girls arrived seven weeks earlier than we had ex- pected, so it was a very special New Year. “Olivia, the twins’ 20-month-old sis— ter, was delighted to meet Sophie and Fern, who have been transferred to a spec1§list neonatal unit for ongoing care. A third baby girl, Malgorzata Chel- mowski, was born at the hospital at 5.23pm to proud parents Waldemar and Iwona. Bethan Hill, senior midwife at Wye Valley NHS Trust, said: “We were de- lighted, with their proud parents, to welcome three babies on New Year’s Day, all Within the same hour. Every ‘ birth is special and we aim to pro- " Vide the highest quality of care.” ’ TWO sets of Hereford parents had a special reason to celebrate the ar- rival of 2016 after their new babies were born within the same hour on the first day of the year.
