remember fallen war heroes
SOLDIERS who lost their
lives at war are being re-
membered in a new exhibi-
tion.
Staff at Presteigne Me-
morial Hall opened the
doors to its memory room
last month to show the col-
lected memorabilia from
local soldiers who died in
the first and second world
wars.
Also remembered in
the exhibition are those
who helped to establish
the 1950's memorial hall
and information from the
groups who use it now.
Gaby Rivers, who helped
with the creation of the
room, said that it took a
year to put the display to-
gether.
She said: “The room is
a culmination of the peo—
ple who gave their lives in
both wars and the people
who created the hall in the
1950’s together with their
military links.
“Also it is celebrating the
activities the hall is now
used for including karate,
dancing and e pantomime
which the Presteigne Play—
ers put on rater} year."

Brave Oscar Minto with his award
Oscar’s
bravery
honour
A BRAVE six-year—old boy
from Hereford has been
recognised for the cour-
age he showed after devel-
oping a needle phobia dur-
ing cancer treatment.
Oscar Minto was just
four when he was diag-
nosed with Acute Lymph-
oblastic Leukaemia — a
cancer of the white blood
cells — in May 2014.
He has received Cancer
Research UK’s Kids &
Teens Star Award for the
bravery he continues to
show throughout his can-
cer treatment.
Oscar was nominated by
his mum, Kate. She said:
“He has been through the
most traumatic experi-
ence, but despite the ups
and downs, he always
seems to bounce back and
lives life to the full.”
Now a pupil at Lord
Scudamore Academy in
Hereford, Oscar became
so terrified of needles
during his treatment that
he wouldn’t let doctors or
nurses near him.
“Once he reached the
stage where more perma-
nent ‘wigglies’ could be
used to deliver his thera-
py everything improved,”
said Mrs Minto.

Oscar became ill in May
2014 during a family holi-
day at Center Parcs. He
was treated for a chest in-
fection, but went back to
the GP when he didn’t re—
spond to antibiotics.
Parents Kate and Steve
Minto were awaiting the
results of tests when Oscar
took a sudden turn for the
worse during a baking ses-
sion with his mum.
“He ended up at Hereford
County Hospital where
they did more blood tests
and X-rays. They told him
there and then that it was
leukaemia,” she said.
Oscar was transferred to
Birmingham Children’s
Hospital where he was
diagnosed with a highly
treatable form of acute
lymphoblastic leukaemia.
Mrs Minto added: “We’ re
so grateful for the treat-
ment that Oscar has had
and for Cancer Research
UK’s life-saving work."
