Hereford want more people to
join their hub to show them
how they can make a living out
of their skills.
James Baker set up Hereford
Make in Harrow Road, off
Whitecross Road. two and a
half years ago.
It is 7,500 square feet, and also
has a forge on site. and appeals
to craft-orientated artists.
There are around ten artists
currently based there, with 12
more about to start a bronze
casting course next week.
Mr Baker graduated in con-
temporary applied arts in 2011
at Hereford College of Arts and
found he was overqualified for
jobs in the local area.
He said: “There are only a few
of us from that [college] year
continuing artistic practice.
They had nowhere to set up to
continue their practice.”
Mr Baker found the studio
spaces available in the county
were very clean and quiet. and
not suited to his blacksmithing
work.
Since setting up the artistic
hub he has applied for grants
and funding and they are soon
to get more equipment, includ-
ing a laser cutter for non-metal
applications.
Tim Rawlins is one of the art-
ists now based there and he
is running the bronze casting
course — there is a waiting list
for the next course.
In two weeks’ time he is set-
ting up a small foundry, which
is supported by Castle Fine
Arts Foundry
Mr Rawlins said: “There is
a sense that there is a very
strong creative community but
it is isolated.
“It is very local and it needs an
international or national inter
est.
“What seems to be happening
James Baker in the forge at Hereford Make
is some sort of space where
things can happen — people can
look to the collective for sup-
port.
“As a group we can look out of
the collective for sales opportu-
nities and grant applications. It
is the sort of thing that Bristol
or London will have.”
The idea is that more experi-
enced artists will help students
develop their own businesses.
The studio offers affordable
rent of £50 for a desk, and £150
for a space in the forge per
month.
Mr Rawlins said: “It is about
being part of something — mov-
ing themselves forward and
celebrating creativity with
other people and putting them-
selves in other opportunities.
“The creative individual can
do their practice there — they
can celebrate with other art-
ists and work out how to make
money out of using their skills
in the broader context.”
Tim Rawlins
Mr Baker thanked Hereford
City Council and UnLtd for
their sponsorship.
